Blockchain interoperability is a reconciliation problem in disguise
Interoperability protocols retrieve, validate, and relay data between chains in different ways. Those operations can be compared with reconciliation concepts without assuming that every implementation practices a claim.
Interoperability and reconciliation can describe overlapping functions, but protocols implement them in different ways.
An IBC relayer in the Cosmos ecosystem maintains connections to two chains. It watches for packet commitments on the source chain, retrieves them along with their Merkle proofs, validates those proofs cryptographically, and submits the verified packet to the destination chain. The destination chain's light client checks the proof and accepts the data.
A Wormhole guardian does functionally the same thing. It observes events on a source chain, collects attestations from other guardians (at least 13 of 19 must sign), and produces a Verified Action Approval that gets submitted to the destination chain. The destination contract verifies the signatures and executes the transfer.
A LayerZero endpoint operates on the same principle. A user application sends a message on Chain A. An oracle and relayer independently verify the message. The verified message is delivered to Chain B.
Strip away the protocol-specific details and what remains is a system that connects to multiple distributed ledgers, retrieves data from them, applies validation rules, and stores the verified result on a destination chain. That is the architecture our patents describe.
How to read this analysis
Technical similarities are starting points for review, not legal conclusions. A patent citation does not prove product use, materiality, validity, or infringement. Any product-specific conclusion requires current evidence, claim construction, and an element-by-element review by qualified patent counsel.
Why the terminology differs
"Interoperability" is a product category. It describes a market need: chains that can talk to each other. "Reconciliation" describes what the system actually does when chains talk to each other: it takes conflicting or independent states, resolves them against rules, and produces a canonical output.
Connectivity providers build bridges, messaging layers, and relayer networks. Product terminology does not resolve claim scope, but neither does a high-level statement that all interoperability is reconciliation. The actual functions and actors must be documented.
How the claims map
The '711 patent's seven elements describe the core pipeline. A network-connected computer (the relayer, guardian, or validator node) maintains interfaces with distributed ledger systems (the source and destination chains). It retrieves data objects (packets, events, transactions). It applies preconfigured rules (proof validation, threshold checks, message format verification). It stores compilation objects on-chain (the verified message, the minted token, the acknowledgment).
The '711 does not include the same flagging or external-device criteria language as the earlier claims. Its scope still depends on all seven limitations and claim construction.
The '029 patent adds criteria-based retrieval language. Filters used by guardians, relayers, or endpoints may provide comparison points, but the claim term and the complete limitation set must be evaluated against a specific protocol version.
The priority date and the target list
November 19, 2016. Cosmos IBC was not yet specified. Wormhole did not exist. LayerZero did not exist. Axelar did not exist. The entire interoperability category was theoretical.
Our target list of 49 companies includes the major interoperability protocols. Their systems perform the operations our patents describe. The priority date predates their founding dates, let alone their launch dates.
Interoperability systems present several useful technical comparison points, particularly around retrieval, validation, relaying, and storage. Product-specific mappings may differ by protocol and version.
